Poems of the Century

.

-Dhurba K. Deep
(1934)

Children you see in Switzerland and
Children you seen in Somalia are
All born of the same bone and flesh
All belong to the same human race

There is no difference
Between the white children's blood
And the back children's blood
They cry when they are hungry
And smile when they are happy

There is no difference
Between the white children's crying
And the black children's crying

They never think of any color
When they cry
They never thing of any caste
When they smile

They have nothing to do
With your caste and color
They have nothing to do with your status and symbols

They must eat
When they are hungry
They must sleep
When they are tired

Their truthful tongues have nothing to do
With your all talks
Their innocent minds have nothing to do
Their innocent minds have nothing to do
With your "election" campaigns

There is no difference
Between the white children's hunger
And the black children's hunger
There is no difference
Between the white children's stomach
And the black children's stomach

They know nothing about your classification fever
They know nothing about your gold and fever
The only difference I have noticed-
Between the children of Switzerland and those of
Somalis is
Children are children in Switzerland
Whereas in Somalia, there are
Only skeletons for children

How can I convince you that now?
These skeletons too represent
The angles from the same heaven!

I just wonder now
Where have all the Somalia angels gone!
Where have all the Somalia children gone!
I can see only their skeletons left behind

Help! They are still moving!
Help! They are still breathing!

I pray you, oh god of children!
Please save these skeletons for heaven's sake!
