Masala Beads: Yardstick for fashion

With a really catchy name and an even catchier stuff on the shelves, Masala Beads is the place to be if you want accessories that you thought only existed on websites. Located off the main streets of Thamel, this shop houses everything you can ever want to buy in Thamel: T-shirts, bangles, necklaces, rings, and badges and even a Native American bow and arrow! As soon as you enter Masala Beads, there is amazement everywhere you look around. The Native American and Rasta theme has an undeniable effect, leaving one with glee. Be it big or small, be it simple or intricate, it cannot be denied that an accessory has a magical way of transforming one’s look. Even something as simple as a bangle can make you look fashionable or sophisticated. Nonetheless, such creative jewelry has become an asset to almost everyone. (see map for location)

Bracelets

There are over 25 different varieties of bracelets ranging from the material to design to size. You can go with the ubiquitous coconut bead bracelet that has a simple design for Rs. 70. You can also choose to spend a little more on synthetic/ leather bracelets with little flower designs for Rs. 140 or those adorned with pearls for Rs. 150. There are also beautiful ones that are made out of seashells, which costs around Rs. 200 to 450.

Necklaces

Necklaces have been an important part of the Nepalese culture so much that even Gods wear them. So why not start a culture or even a religion of your own with something as simple as a coconut bead necklace for Rs. 150. There is also a collection of rather expensive and grand pearl and gemstone studded necklaces, which cost around Rs. 2,400 for the classy. The most peculiar one in this collection has to be the techno ball necklace, which is composed of pearl and other plastics that has flashy colors, definitely something for all the Generation X fanatics.

T-Shirts

The range, variation and simply the uniqueness of the prints and colors of the t-shirts around here make it a must have for just about anyone. A lot of them have the likes of Rasta legend Bob Marley’s and guitar virtuoso Jimi Hendrix’s face. There are also some proactive ones, which say ‘Free Tibet’ or something abstract like blotches of different colors. Above all, the quality and finish make them an eye turner.

Bags

Bags are yet another accessory that enhances one’s look and also aid in tucking stuff in with ease. Masala Beads has a large collection of bags that are all head turners. You can opt for hemp bags that have a rugged outlook and they come in all colors and designs. There are also imported Vietnamese bags that are made of synthetic materials that make you feel young and trendy.

Dream Catchers

Having bad dreams? Having trouble sleeping at night? Worry no more. All you have to do is hang a dream catcher in your room. It is a Native American myth that if you hang one of those, then all your bad dreams get caught in the feathery basket and voila. Dream catchers range from Rs. 400 to Rs. 900 depending on the size and of course, how badly you want nightmares to go away.
